THE FACE
MOTION DESIGN
2022
Scanography is the art of making photographs or stop motion films solely with the use of a flatbed scanner. Scanography has been an important medium within my creative process due to the fact that it allows me to create work that is the perfect mix of both digital and physical. You are able to use the scanner to your advantage as a way to create interesting distortions that bring your images to life. When I was first introduced to the medium I wanted to learn a lot about what techniques you could do on the scanner. I began to stretch, reverse, compress, rotate, warp and relocate my prints to experiment with various outcomes. For this piece in particular I wanted to focus on stretch scanning. I moved the head bit by bit for each scan, making it more stretched each time. When you compile all of the scanned images together and create a loop, you get a short animation of the head becoming disturbingly stretched and compressed over and over.
I created this piece after being inspired by the music group, Odd Future. For their second collaborative LP, they created a vinyl cover that collaged the member faces all together. I wanted to recreate my own rendition of this image with moving elements which led to a very omniscient final film.
